October 11th at 7:00pm
Jason Dewees, award winning author of the book Designing With Palms, will illustrate how palms are used to create stunning garden landscapes. He will highlight Casa de las Palmas, a Hilo garden featured in his book and one of the extraordinary gardens on the IPS tour. Jason gave a very popular lecture to HIPS a few years back on landscaping with palms and this new talk is sure to spark ideas for your own garden.
October 12th at 7:00pm
Don Hemmes, professor emeritus UH Hilo and longtime Hawaii Palm Society member, welcomes biennial attendees to Hawaii Island and talks about the early days of HIPS and its legacy garden at the Panaewa Zoo. Don will also share the story about creating the UH Hilo Botanical Garden with its extensive cycad collection and palmy river walk that has transformed the campus and lifts the spirits of students, faculty, and visitors.
Shelley Hoist, award winning palm fiber artist shares her unique perspective and relationship with palms through images of her vast range of past work and commissionable pieces. Shelley will have a special Art of Palm Exhibit set up in the banquet room, and will be there to chat with interested attendees after her talk. Shelley is also donating a portion of the evening's proceeds to the International Palm Society.
