Oahu Island Package October 9 –11, 2022
The International Palm Society invites its members in Hawaii to join them on the Oahu portion of the full biennial. The package will include a welcome reception and banquet on October 9th followed by a slideshow lecture on new phylogenetic research on Dypsis by Wolf Eiserhardt. On October 10th, members of the Lyon Arboretum staff will welcome the group and guide the group through its extensive collection of palms. The arboretum will close the doors to the public during our stay. The group may also visit the historical Foster Garden where some of the trees were planted by Dr. William Hillebrand on land leased from the Hawaiian queen Kalama in 1853. In the evening members will enjoy a banquet and lecture by Mike DeMotta of the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Mike will talk about Pritchardia and the recent propagation program for P. woodii on Maui. On the 11th, the group will travel to the vast 400 acre Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden where once again they will be met by staff and lead through the best of the extensive palm collection. After touring the garden, attendees will be taken to the Honolulu airport for the flight back to Hilo. Transportation to the gardens from the hotel and to Honolulu on departure is included, as well as the reception and banquets with evening speakers. Breakfast and lunch is not included though a box lunch may be purchased separately on the 10th. Conference cost without hotel = $450.00

Catch up with Andrew Henderson recently back from the Dominican Republic studying Cocothrinax which is now his favorite genus. That is really saying something since he has described nearly 300 species of palms new to science and has written 10 books on palms covering the world from A Field Guide to the Palms of the Americas (in collaboration with Rodrigo Bernal and Gloria Galeano) to Palms of Vietnam.
